What does the theater look like?
AI industry: Constantly performing for clients, saying it is pursuing smarter models and more useful AI scientists on the way to AGI, or to helping everyone adapt to life after AGI. Seniors keep interviewing to avoid being laid off; juniors keep interviewing so they can quickly land an internship or a full-time job.
AI academia: Constantly performing the pursuit of smarter models and more useful AI scientists. Seniors keep marking their territory like puppies, introducing ever more elaborate definitions while also ceaselessly redefining AGI. Juniors keep clustering with other juniors so they can fission into more citations and avoid being left behind by the times.
Other disciplines (one common behavior): (Sometimes holding back disgust, but) continuously performing loyalty as devout AI believers, so that under the AI wave they can still secure funding.
