Spring in Atherton
Published:
As we walked out of the library, an elderly white woman with silver hair saw us and said “excuse me” three times. She spoke to us with real pride, took out her phone, and said she had seen the two of us taking photos with the frog statue out front. Every Christmas, she told us, that frog gets dressed up in a Christmas outfit, look, just like this! Then she asked, very sincerely, whether we would still be here at Christmas, and how we had even heard of Atherton, because the place is so unremarkable, so quiet, so low-key. We told her we would probably each be heading home by then. She added that her son had been learning Chinese since he was a little kid, and that he speaks it really well.

We were in too much of a hurry to take a photo with her. I can only hope to move here someday, if I get the chance.
